One-on-One with Phil Mahre

  • Vermont Ski & Snowboard Museum via ZOOM 1 South Main Street Stowe, VT 05672 United States (map)

The Red Bench Speaker Series wraps up for the season with one final event; a one-on-one conversation with the legendary World Cup and Olympic alpine ski racer, Phil Mahre.

Phil Mahre, a native of Yakima, Washington, is widely regarded as one of America’s greatest ski racing talents, along with his brother, Steve. Phil was a member of three US Olympic Teams in 1976, 1980, and 1984. At the 1980 Lake Placid games, he took silver in slalom, and at the 1984 Sarajevo games, he took gold in slalom.

Despite those extraordinary performances he is perhaps best remembered for winning the FIS Overall Alpine World Cup crowns from 1981-1983. Phil won 27 individual World Cup races and competed as a member of the US Ski Team from 1976-1984.

Phil comes from a large and widely regarded ski racing family. He grew up in the shadow of the White Pass Ski Area where his father served as Mountain Manager.

Peter Graves will moderate this conversation. Peter, a Vermont native and Nordic skier has dedicated his career to the sport. Over his 40-year career, he has served as a coach with the US Ski team and head coach at Harvard for six seasons. He is perhaps best known for his long career as a television and stadium announcer having covered 11 Olympic Games, beginning with a stint at ABC TV Sports as a cross-country skiing commentator.
